It's Trees All The Way Down
The nodes of constituent structure trees are constituent structure trees. It is these inner trees that cyclic transformations apply to. Consequently, a parsing theory for TG is feasible after all, and extremely abstract underlying structures are no longer required to deal with constituent structure and scope relations for English auxiliaries and adverbs. |
