Special Events

  • Austronesianists will be interested to know that the Eleventh International Conference on Austronesian Linguistics (11-ICAL) will be held from June 22-26, 2009, in Aussois, France, a small village in the French Alps. Dr. Bob Blust will be one of three keynote speakers, along with Nikolaus Himmelmann and Aone van Engelenhoven. Check out the above link to find out more.

Regular Events

  • The Department holds a weekly Tuesday Seminar, where local or visiting scholars present research talks. The Colloquium is held in St. John 11 from Noon to 1:15.

  • The Austronesian Circle sponsors talks on topics relating to Austronesian linguistics on Thursday evenings throughout the school year. There are usually from four to eight talks a semester, depending on the availability of speakers. The Austronesian Circle has been meeting for more than thirty years. Professor Albert Schütz, schutz@hawaii.edu is the organizer of the Austronesian Circle. Anyone interested in speaking should contact Dr. Schütz.

  • The Language Acquisition and Development reading group is an informal reading group focusing on the acquisition of human language.

  • The Cognitive Linguistics Research Group is an informal research group focusing on language as a cognition function and the relation between language and other cognitive functions. Meetings are more or less every other week during the semester. For information, contact the organizer, Sachie Maruyama at sachiem@hawaii.edu or So Young Kim at kims@hawaii.edu.

  • The UH Language Documentation Project For information, contact the coordinator at uhdoc@ling.lll.hawaii.edu.
