SYLLABUS, FIRST DRAFT
INSTRUCTOR: David Stampe. The instructor will be in India from
from early December until the second week of classes. Office hours
will be announced on his return. The first week of classes will be
met by Yuko Otsuka.
PREREQUISITES: Experience equal to an advanced introduction to
linguistic analysis, such as LING 320, or permission of instructor,
which is granted provided the background assumptions of the first
three chapters of the text aren't over your head. I will discuss
some background material, but mostly only where it's controversial.
TEXT: Laurie Bauer, Introducing Linguistic Morphology, 2nd ed.,
Washington, DC: Georgetown Univ. Press, paperback ISBN 0-87840-343-4.
DESCRIPTION: In this introduction to linguistic morphology -- the
structure of words -- we will work through a recent textbook on the
subject, supplemented occasionally by readings from recent or classic
literature (on the web, on reserve in the Linguistics Reading Room in
Moore Hall, or in handouts). You should bring questions about the
readings to the class meeting for which they are assigned, and be
prepared to answer questions about the readings.
In addition we will do analyses of morphological data from languages
of many types, genetic groupings, and geographic areas. You should
be ready to submit your analyses at the class meeting for which they
are assigned, and also to present your analysis to the class and
defend it against other possible analyses.
In lieu of exams, there will be a paper due on the last day of class
describing the morphology of a language, chosen with the instructor's
help, for which a satisfactory morphological analysis has previously
not been done. Work on this project will begin early in the semester,
and will involve a mid term report and a final oral class presentation.
GRADES will be based on class participation and the final project.
