He
never spoonfed the students and the grades he gave truly reflected their
performance and capability. I found Stan a good scholar-I have admired and will
always admire him for his openness in expressing what he thought. He was brave
to show what he thought about linguistic theories and how we should do syntax
without being afraid to be different or outrageous. He never bowed to the
mainstream way of doing linguistics. That's what I like very much about him, and
whenever I discussed syntactic problems with him, I always gained some insight
in my own language. He was very very bright, in my opinion. I really enjoyed
talking, arguing, joking with him. There was no professor-student gap at all
between us. Sometimes I thought he was my friend. I was lucky to study at the
Department of Linguistics at UH and had a great opportunity to study with Stan.
