In memory of Stanley Starosta

Khru Stan, this is the term that we all use to address him whenever his name pops up  among Thai students graduated from Hawaii. It is the respectable term, only a limited set of foreign instructors will be addressed as khru. He is well-respected among Thai students. As for me, he is not only a professor in terms of providing linguistics knowledge but also a long time friend. He is the one who has inspired me with lexicase, the theory that I am passing on to my Thai students even now.  He lightened the world of syntax for me, until I got hooked to it and carried it as one of my specialties in linguistics. I have had a good relationship with Stan. In happiness or in my tough time, he was always there to listen to me and comfort me. He tried to help me in every which way he could so that I could pass my tough time. He never turned his back against me whenever I needed help. Through his sincere and generous personality, I hardly hesitated to visit him and his family at his house on the top of the hill. I was willing to cook several Thai dishes for him and his family. The Starosta family never treated me like I was an alien from the Third world. Whenever he came to Thailand, he tried to visit me every time he could, even though I do not live in Bangkok, he flew up to Chiangmai to see me. We always had a great time together talking about lexicase and enjoying sightseeing around Chiangmai. I am so happy that I could provide him some natural beauty to freshen his mind from his hard work back in Honolulu. Whatever activities we shared together both in Honolulu or Thailand, I will always remember. He is a generous gentleman and always is. He has done several good things to help Thai students. From his good behaviour, I am sure that he has left us for something better in his life after death. He deserves to be with his god, the holy spirit that he always believes in. I know he is in heaven, the most perfect resting place for a good man like him.
