When to apply

Important: The application deadline for Fall semester has been changed to January 10th.
  • For admission in the Fall semester, the deadline for receipt of all application materials will be January 10th. Applications received after that deadline will be considered as space permits.
  • For admission in the Spring semester, the deadline for receipt of all application materials is the preceding September 1st. Applications received after that deadline will be considered as space permits.

How to apply for admission

The application process consists of two components: (i) an application to UH Graduate Division, and (ii) an application to the Department of Linguistics. Be sure to complete both components fully.

  2. Apply for admission to the UH Graduate Division, as follows:

    1. Download university system application form and instructions for graduate admissions. Information on how to apply can be found at:
      http://www.hawaii.edu/graduate/admissions/html/apply.htm#forms
      http://www.hawaii.edu/graduatestudies/admissions/html/admissions.htm

      You may apply to the Graduate Division either online or by regular mail.

    2. You will need to provide the following set of documents to the Graduate Division:

      1. Application form, including Statement of Objectives, and appropriate fee;
      2. One official transcript from each postsecondary institution attended, sent directly from the institution to the Graduate Division;
      3. Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report if required (for international applicants, as well as some immigrant and US applicants);
      4. Verification of financial status (for international applicants).

  3. Apply for admission to the UH Department of Linguistics.
    1. Collect the following separate set of documents, to be sent to the Linguistics Department:
      1. The Department of Linguistics Application form
      2. 3 letters of recommendation (a form is included in the downloadable packet);
      3. One official transcript from each postsecondary institution attended, sent directly from the institution to the Linguistics Department; [yes this is a duplicate of #2 above]
      4. Your GRE scores (no more than 5 years old);
      5. A sample of your academic writing, such as a seminar paper. This must be in English.

    2. Send these documents to the Linguistics Department:

NOTE: If you are interested in working primarily on second language acquisition with Professor Bley-Vroman and/or Professor Schwartz, please direct your application to the Department of Second Language Studies, where they are also members of the Graduate Faculty.
