Funeral Chant

Ema

I am Matias Gomes, an undergraduate student at UH from East Timor. I am a native speaker of Ema Atadame.  Since Spring 2004, I have been documenting my language in UH Language Documentation Project and Ryoko Hattori has been working with me.  In Spring 2004, I presented the 300 item basic vocabulary list in Ema.  In the Fall 2004, I documented a funeral chant in Ema.  And this Spring, I have begun working on the grammar.  Last semester, Ryoko and I approached the linguistics department to have my language to be documented in Field Method Class, a class to train graduate students in language documentation skills through in-class data elicitation from a native speaker of underdocumented language.  I was successfully chosen to be a language consultant for the class.  Now, nine graduate students are documenting Ema Atadame.  Since I also want to document my language, I decided to be in charge of documentation of Ema Atadame pronouns and numerals.  This simultaneously serves as my third project for the Language Documentation Project.  Our analysis on pronouns and numerals is presented here.

There is a lot more to say.  Please visit this webpage periodically. ;-)
