Course format. This section uses the unit mastery, self-directed study format. Students study the reading materials for each unit on their own, and then receive credit for mastering units by passing mastery tests in the test center and completing a writing assignment and an editing assignment online. In addition, there will be three short papers during the semester.
Unit mastery tests are proctored and must be taken in the test center. Other work will be submitted online through laulima.
Writing Intensive (WI). Linguistics 102 Unit Mastery is now Writing Intensive. This means that
- a major portion of your learning will be through the medium of writing, both formal and informal, and
- you will receive instruction on writing and will learn how linguistics can help your writing.
- You must complete a substantial amount of writing (4100-6300 words) in order to pass the course.
- More than half of your grade (about 55%) will depend upon your written work.
Test center. The test center is in Moore Hall 103 and is open weekdays from 9:00 to 1:50. You need to visit the test center as early as possible in the semester to receive a course syllabus and a list of readings assigned for each unit.
Testing. Each unit mastery test consists of ten multiple choice questions. You may try as many as three times to pass the mastery test for any given unit. If you fail the test for a unit, you may take it again on a different day. You may take several tests in a single day, as long as they are all for different units.
Textbook. The textbook is Language: Its structure and use, 5th edition, by Edward Finegan (ISBN 978-1413030556); it is in the campus bookstore. The bookstore also has an optional workbook that goes with the textbook. Only the textbook is required. (If you have a copy of the 4th edition, you can use it instead of the 5th.)
