Song |
This song, Akata Sundunchi is one of the Okinawan children's songs which is widely known among Uchinaa-chu (Okinawan people). The song is sung for Miruku (Miroku), Budhisattva as the Hoojoo Kigan (prayer for luxuriance) at the ceremony which is held in July of the lunar calendar. Akata is a village close to the Sui (Shuri) castle. Akata has the mask of Miruku inside Sundunchi (the house of oracle). Children sing this song, Akata Sundunchi while parading around the village on the Hoojoo Kigan is held. Today, the song is sung not only for the Hoojoo Kigan ceremony but also as a play song. There are hand gestures along with the song. There are several other songs about Miruku in Okinawa. |
